Scholarship opportunities are available through Big Country EC and affiliates:
- Big Country EC Academic Scholarship – Two $4,000 scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors whose parent(s)/guardian(s) are members of Big Country EC. Deadline: March 1, 2024.
- Directors Memorial Scholarship, Golden Spread Electric Cooperative - $2,000 scholarships will be awarded to selected recipients who are 1) entering freshmen college or university students and 2) child or spouse of a Big Country EC member. Deadline: March 1, 2024.
- Texas Rural Electric Women’s Association (TREWA) Scholarship - Twenty (20) TREWA scholarships of $1,500 each will be awarded to CURRENT TREWA members and their children. If you are not currently a TREWA member, you may submit the membership application, membership fee, and scholarship application at once. Applicant or applicant’s parent or guardian must also be a current member or an employee of a Texas electric cooperative such as Big Country EC. Scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school seniors, full-time college students or adults who have been accepted as a full-time student to attend any accredited college, university, junior college, community college, trade/technical or business school of their choice. Deadline: March 15, 2024.

1. How to Start Your College Essay
To start, ask yourself this question: “What do I want readers to know about me that they they can't find out from the rest of my application package?”
The answer is a trait or characteristic that defines you, not your experiences or accomplishments.
Are you resourceful? Funny? Resilient? Hard-working? Content?
Your answer is essential. Why? Your job is to tell colleges what you want then to know about you, not what you think they want you to tell them. And they already know about your accomplishments from the rest of the application. Give them some insight into who you really are.
2. What makes a great college essay topic?
Any topic is good as long as it answers the prompt, focuses on the student and shows insight. Despite what you might have heard, your child does not need to climb a mountain or travel to a third-world country to write a compelling story.
Admissions officers are impressed with meaningful stories about babysitting or making meatball with grandma, navigating an icy highway or playing basketball with friends. The best topics we see are often mundane and focus on anything that truly demonstrates who the applicant is.
